Ben Cohen, CEO and founder of the ice cream company, has started a new nonprofit business selling cannabis products, with the profits dedicated to social causes.
The company named "Ben's Best Blnz," or B3 for short, aims to "sell Great Pot and use the power of our business to Right the Wrongs of the War on Drugs," according to its website.
Their strategy is to partner with for-profit businesses, thereby paying B3 a royalty to use its formulas, packaging, and trademarks. Those royalties to come with a catch. The entirety of those royalty profits, after expenses, will go towards their social mission: getting people convicted of nonviolent, cannabis-related crimes out of jail, getting their criminal records expunged, advocating for marijuana to be removed from the federal government's Schedule 1 list, which includes drugs such as heroin, and investing in Black-owned cannabis businesses.
If you want more details, go onto the website and see the entire structure.
In many cases, I feel like Ben Cohen is trying to do a Paul Newman. The products you buy from this company will be donated to society. The difference is they're giving a portion. After all, Newman's Own has been known to donate 100% of its funds to charity. Let's see how this formula goes.
